The Annual ‘Northwoods Gran Prix’ at the private Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL is the last Northwoods event of each season. The Autobahn CC is located about 2.5 miles west of the Chicagoland Speedway with the same natural type setting and environment as our beloved Road America. It is an exclusive member’s only track that can be rented out as approved by their board. It features two distinct tracks that can be combined to run a full circuit if so desired. The full track length is a little over 3.5 miles comprised of the South track’s 2.06 miles with 15 turns and the North track’s 1.5 miles and 9 turns. It is run in the quiet countryside with some very nice elevation changes with many far set back trees on the North track and rolling meadows on the South track. The corners apexes are laid out with rumble strips and plenty of run off.

Autobahn continues to improve their facility with many new additions in the past few years. A 7000 sq ft Timing and Scoring building has been added adjacent to the South with a large 2,500 sq ft observation deck that allows spectators to view both the North and South tracks. The new building includes classroom space, locker rooms, showers, bathrooms and a lounge with plasma TV, a few amenities added by Autobahn to provide some of the comfortable features their members enjoy.

Bob Bondurant from Bondurant Racing School visited the ACC and drove the circuit. He compared the facilities to that of a golf course, he commented "both circuits have very different personalities, the North being a very flowing, fast track and the South a long beast with lots of runoff".

In the eye of the beholder, there are factors that do make one event more enjoyable than another. First and foremost there is quality of event, while location close to home is also another dynamic. If you have participated in an event with the Northwoods Shelby Club, you know that you can be certain of a good program and plenty of track time.
